Grilled Asparagus Recipes

Flavorful and aromatic
grilled asparagus recipes are easy to prepare and quick cooking. Asparagus has become one of the most popular vegetables, and can be found most of the year in produce sections. The best, however, is the fresh picked asparagus spears found in the early Spring.

Asparagus is a member of the lily family. Only producing spears for a short time in the spring, it requires a high level of nutrients to grow well. After the harvesting period, the plants are allowed to grow wild, become tall and lacy, and somewhat similar to asparagus ferns (not related). Berries form in the fall and turn red. When the plants die in the fall, they are removed and a deep layer of compost is applied. The rich compost will feed the roots during their winter dormancy and through the next growing season.
Aspargus can be prepared many ways. Steaming, roasting, and sauteing are typical methods used. But grilling asparagus give the spears and tips more flavor, due to the browning effect caused by the high, searing temperatures.
Simply prepared with just a light coating of oil, and a bit of salt and pepper, grilled asparagus is delicious. More complex asparagus recipes are just as delectable. One of my favorites is grilled proscuitto asparagus. Just grill the spears as mentioned above until almost done, then wrap each one with a slice of Italian proscuitto ham. Pop the wrapped spears into the grill again for another minute or two and they're done! What a delightful dish!
